There is a profound responsibility in helping a couple settle into their final chapter. For Lyn and Bruce, the transition to Rossmoyne Waters Village was less a retreat and more a deliberate distillation - a welcoming shift from the weight of a high-maintenance family home to the ease of a slower lifestyle. When RDS was invited to lead this eight-month collaboration, our task was to move beyond the sterile, off-the-plan shell and translate their personal histories into a tactile, living landscape of pieces they would wake up to and be inspired by every day.
The interior is a deliberate assembly of international craftsmanship and local soul. Recognising that the couple’s aesthetic was yet to be defined, the studio steered the project with quiet authority to uncover a visual language that felt inherently theirs. We bridged the gap between global design and Australian artistry, sourcing from the workshops of Italy, Scandinavia, and New York, while commissioning three local artists to create site-specific works that anchor the home’s narrative. Every element was selected for its longevity and the way it responds to the quiet, honeyed rituals of daily life.
Key to our approach was adding a softness to the apartment’s modern framework, using a native palette of materials to forge a quality akin to a deep, concentrated sigh. This vision is rounded out by a rigorous curation of furniture and art: the cool elegance of marble and chrome meeting the grounded warmth of solid stained timber and leather. The interplay of boucle fabrics, lacquered timber, and powdercoated aluminium creates a nuanced, layered atmosphere that feels both resilient and refined.
The result is a resolved sanctuary designed to age gracefully alongside its inhabitants - a retreat that feels as though it has always been there.
Kind Words
“Kaila from RDS is amazing! Kaila’s sense of colour, materials and dimensions is extraordinary. We engaged Kaila to assist and advise on the interior furnishing and the layout of our new apartment, and it was one of the best decisions we made, apart from deciding to downsize.
Kaila gave us ideas and gently took us on an adventure where we considered furniture and design that previously we would not have thought of. The colour combinations of furniture, artwork and objects and the different materials comprising fabric, leather, wood, marble, lacquer and metal sensationally come together which has made the apartment a joy to live in. Kaila’s collaborative approach to the whole process, whereby we were involved in making decisions and our tastes accommodated made the whole exercise a great experience. We come through the front door and think WOW!!”
